What is the Issue?
The FDA has recalled 92,496 Ethicon surgical staplers after it was discovered that the devices may cause serious patient harm and even death.
After an investigation, Ethicon, a part of the Johnson & Johnson family of companies, confirmed that the staplers could misfire and lead to malformed staples and comprise the integrity of the staple line in patients.
Additionally, the investigation found that a shift in the manufacturing process in March 2018 may have contributed to the failure of the devices.
The affected devices include:
- Endo-Surgery Curved Intraluminal Stapler with Adjustable Height Staples
- Endo-Surgery Endoscopic Curved Intraluminal Stapler with Adjustable Height Staples
These surgical staplers were used by surgeons primarily in the gastrointestinal tract during surgical procedures.
